Thinkers Manifesto

Thinkers of the world, Unite!  You have nothing to gain but a peaceful, freedom-loving, rights-respecting world full of joy and thanksgiving.

All sorts of groups have united to collectively advocate ideas.  What better unity could be joined than a group advocating thinking.  Every human being has the ability to think. Thinking people know that a person can only know what he or she personally understands.  Thinking people know that it is just as important to be aware of what you haven’t understood as it is to know what you have understood. The horror of September 11, 2001 was perpetrated by people who believed without thought. Thinking people know of the hazards of belief without thought.

A person of any ethnic background, religious tradition, or philosophic background can choose to think. Our society needs to encourage a coalition of thinkers.  Thinking is the human means to gain knowledge and provides the foundation for peaceful discussion of differences.

Thoughtful leaders of the various belief systems around the world must be welcomed into a coalition advocating thought.  The various belief systems will always contain conflicting premises and conclusions. Only thought can be used to discuss, analyze, and argue for the different viewpoints.  Thinking leaders will recognize that each individual is responsible for reaching his or her own conclusions. The leaders’ responsibility is to encourage those from their belief system to respect the right of others to differ and to peacefully coexist with them. People within a belief system who attempt to destroy values of others or to take values from them without their consent must be prohibited from taking action.

Each person’s actions come from the decisions made by his or her own mind. If a person is not stopped from taking an action that person is free. In a free society each person is free to take the actions they judge to be best. Problems only occur when two individuals make choices that conflict.  In that case the role of government is to protect the individual who is legitimately free to act and to stop the person who should not be free to act.  Government should protect each of us from having values taken from us without our consent.  This is the reason that the initiation of force and the use of fraud are prohibited in a free society.

A person’s values are those material things and character traits that serve his or her life. Each person’s choice of values to pursue belongs to that person.  The time and resources allocated to work, housing, recreation, charity, family, community, etc. is a decision that morally belongs to each individual.

Thinkers must unite to ensure that all people are free to act on their own thoughts, neither forcing others to serve their needs nor being forced to serve others’ needs. Only on such a basis can a society of mutual respect, voluntary cooperation, and benevolence be founded.  Only on such a basis can everyone give thanks to everyone else for the self-responsibility that each accepts. Only on such a basis will a community of productive individuals labor for themselves and trade with others to mutual benefit.  All will give thanks to all for the joyous society that they have helped create and sustain.
