To win a life full of values, an individual must look, think, and act to achieve values. Achieving values will win the happiness that is our birthright.
All of us act to achieve our values within a complex, interdependent society. The kind of society we need is one that recognizes our right to act in support of achieving our values, the values that support our life and lead to happiness. The right to liberty is the right to take that action.
The “Declaration of Independence” of the United States of America provides us a wonderfully clear, concise, and inspiring phrase to remind us of this proper role for society in the life of the individual. The “right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” recognizes our right to take action in support of our lives and protects us from those who would force us to serve their needs rather than our own. It protects our free association with those who understand the importance and righteousness involved in the mutual exchange of values that benefits all parties to the exchange.
