“Enduring Freedom” is the name of the military operation used to retaliate against the murderers of the innocent victims of the terror operation of September 11, 2001. The retaliatory operation also attacked those who provided the murderers with support. The operation’s goal was to disrupt the terrorist network and protect civilization from such murderous operations in the future.
Those who have not served can’t match the courage of those on the front lines of operation Enduring Freedom, but we can do something important to further the long-term effort to achieve enduring freedom.
Think about someone who understands the truth of the need for self-responsibility, individual freedom, mutual respect, voluntary cooperation, and benevolence. Can such a person possibly commit such heinous action? The answer is clearly, NO!
The robot-like, mindless, selfless action of the murderers is not possible to a person who understands human nature. The mind is essential to one’s nature as a human being. To give up one’s mind, one’s self, and mindlessly follow orders is a recipe for eventual disaster.
The thoughtful leaders of the various belief systems around the world need to be encouraged to lead in the direction of thought and tolerance. People must be encouraged not to thoughtlessly accept a belief system, but to think carefully, recognize that others might reach different conclusions, and most importantly respect their right to do so. In such an environment freedom can be enduring.
What can we do? Spread the ideas that are captured by the BuildValues logo. Encourage others to accept responsibility for, and to pursue, their own well-being and happiness. Encourage them to participate in voluntary cooperation with others giving value for value received. Make it clear that it is wrong to destroy the values of others or to take values from others without their consent. Teach that freedom requires retaliating against those who would destroy or steal values from others. As these principles become firmly grounded in fact and logic and throughout society, the perverted thinking, or more precisely the lack of thinking, that that led to 9/11 will become a relic of the past.
